DESCRIPTION:For more than thirty years\, the Spanish Society for Medieval
English Language and Literature has promoted scholarship in medieval studi
es outside the Anglophone world. Now\, for the first time in its history\,
SELIM will hold its annual conference outside of Spain\, at the Universit
y of Oxford. In celebration of this international partnership and of the d
iversity of global medieval studies\, the theme of the conference will be
European Connections. The society invites papers from scholars and student
s anywhere in the world dealing with ANY ASPECT of medieval English langua
ge or literature. Papers that address the conference theme are particularl
y welcomed\, but all submissions will be considered.\n\nAt a time when pol
itical changes have increasingly challenged collaboration within Europe\,
SELIM offers a unique opportunity to strengthen links between Spanish acad
emics and the UK and rest of the world. The organisers aim to foreground a
diversity of interests and approaches to medieval English\, offering a ri
ch programme of research. The conference will demonstrate the breadth of S
panish scholarship in the field of medieval English language and literatur
e\, and will encourage scholars of different backgrounds to forge new conn
ections.\n\nA key priority of the conference is the advancement of student
s and early-career scholars\, who will have the opportunity to meet and pr
esent alongside established scholars\, and to submit their research to the
society’s journal. A number of financial bursaries will be available fo
r graduate students\, and the organisers will hold two events aimed at jun
ior delegates: a pre-conference workshop run by the Oxford-based\, Europea
 n Research Council-funded CLASP project\, and a ‘knowledge exchange’ t
o facilitate idea-sharing between students of diverse nationalities.\n\nFo
r further information about SELIM\, its journal\, and how to become a memb
er\, please visit http://www.selimsociety.com\nSpeakers:\n Various Speaker

DESCRIPTION:This workshop is part of the Consolidated Library of Anglo-Sax
on Poetry project (CLASP). For more information on the project\, please vi
sit http://clasp.eu\n\nIn the thirty years since the publication of R. D.
Fulk’s A History of Old English Meter\, metrical theory has been brought
to bear on questions of poetic style\, dating\, linguistics and language
history\, editing practice\, manuscript analysis and scribal practice. No
longer viewed as an inner sanctum of detailed theory separable from the ma
in work of Old English studies\, the importance of metrical analysis to th
e broad work of textual criticism cannot be overstated.\n\nThis one-day wo
rkshop will feature twenty-minute papers on the study of Old English and/o
r Latin metre in Anglo-Saxon texts\, with a focus on the application of me
trical study to literary criticism and manuscript studies. Welcoming contr
ibutions from established metrists and new scholars\, we aim to engage wit
h current debate and invite new perspectives. The workshop will make clear
the relevance and urgency of metrical studies for Anglo-Saxonist scholars
hip.\n\nThe workshop will be preceded by a graduate training course on Oct
ober 29th. Attendees will test CLASP's new metrical teaching materials\, a
nd recieve a crash course in using Old English metre for literary critical
work. Further information and tickets can be found on the event page: htt
