DESCRIPTION:The Oxford Conservative Thought (OCT) Reading Group will hold
a discussion on the relationship between liberty and virtue with Dr Kevin
Vallier (who will attend virtually)\, evaluating the contrasting 'postlibe
ral' and 'fusionist' approaches within conservative thought.\n\nDr Vallier
\, Professor of Philosophy at the Institute for American Constitutional Th
ought and Leadership at University of Toledo\, is the author of 'All the K
ingdoms of the World: on Radical Religious Alternatives to Liberalism' (20
23)\, which explores contemporary political doctrines that call for a conf
essional state and for religious coercion in response to perceived failure
s of liberalism -- explores them "not as lurid oddities\, but as ideas tha
t might be true". He is currently working on a new book clarifying and def
ending the 'fusionist' position that traditional virtues are best advanced
under a broadly liberal political regime.\n\nDr Vallier will address the
meeting virtually\, and we will then have an open discussion around the we
ek's topic in which all attendees are encouraged to participate actively.\
n\n------\n\nThe Oxford Conservative Thought (OCT) Reading Group is a non-
partisan group devoted to academic exploration of small-c conservative pol
itical thought. We welcome\, and actively encourage\, viewpoint diversity
and constructive engagement across ideological divides (all good-willed pa
rticipants are welcome!)\n\nEach week we read one assigned text\, and we r
ecommend more for anyone who is very keen!\n\nYou can view our reading lis

Fridays from 4-5:30pm.\n\nPlease register here to attend and we’ll send

DESCRIPTION:In this public lecture Kevin Vallier will introduce and discus
s 'Catholic integralism'\, drawing on the arguments of his 2023 Oxford Uni
versity Press book 'All the Kingdoms of the World: On Radical Religious Al
ternatives to Liberalism'. Integralism is an increasingly popular account
of the right relationship between the church and state within Catholic pol
itical thought\, which holds that the state should recognise and uphold th
e true religion. In thus rejects many of the central tenets of contemporar
y liberalism. Vallier will introduce integralism's central claims and expl
ain its appeal\, but ultimately argue that it should be rejected due to co
ntaining an insurmountable internal inconsistency within its account of ju
stice.\n\nThe lecture will be followed by a response from Tom Simpson\, an
d Q&A.\n\nThe lecture begins at 5:30pm\, with refreshments available from
5pm. All are welcome to attend.\nSpeakers:\nKevin Vallier (Bowling Green S
