DESCRIPTION:Many important genetic and non-genetic causes of major disease
s still await discovery.\n\nSeveral big blood-based prospective studies ha
ve been undertaken this century\, including the China Kadoorie Biobank (CK
 B) and UK Biobank\, both based in Oxford. \n\nMajor findings are now emerg
ing in CKB\, some expected and some intriguingly unexpected but novel\, in
cluding assessment of any causal protective effects of moderate alcohol dr
inking on stroke and heart disease using the East Asian specific “flushi
ng” genes. The big maturing biobanks in the Eastern and Western populati
ons with different lifestyles\, environments and genetic architectures wil
l greatly improve our understanding about the aetiology of many diseases.\
