DESCRIPTION:The Hat: an aperiodic monotile\nThursday 20 July\, 2023\n6pm -
7.15pm Andrew Wiles Building\, Mathematical Institute\, Oxford\n\nThis ta
lk and panel discussion will celebrate the discovery of a single shape tha
t completely covers an infinitely large flat surface without repeating.\n\
nThe famous Penrose tiling is made of two elementary shapes\, or tiles\, a
nd mathematicians have long wondered about the existence of a single tile
that could tile the plane aperiodically. Earlier this year such a shape wa
s discovered: the Hat!\n\nFor this public talk\, organised in partnership
with the Clay Mathematics Institute\, Chaim Goodman-Strauss (National Muse
um of Mathematics/University of Arkansas)\, one of the authors of this new
work\, will give an overview of the Hat.\n\nThis will be followed by a pa
nel discussion featuring Craig Kaplan (University of Waterloo)\, Marjorie
Senechal (Smith College) and Roger Penrose (University of Oxford) as well
as Chaim Goodman-Strauss. The discussion will be chaired by Henna Koivusal
o (University of Bristol).\n\nPlease email external-relations@maths.ox.ac.
