Free Speech, Good Speech, and Social Media: Self-control or legal control?
Esteemed philosopher Professor Sir Richard Sorabji follows his 2015 free speech lecture by turning his centuries-spanning analysis to the contemporary conundrum posed by social media.
He will review cross-cultural thinking throughout the ages on religious freedom of expression to explore how we can better foster a culture of listening to rival views. In the lecture, he will question whether legal restrictions on certain speech acts or self-restraint would be most effective at combating extremist content and damaging political propaganda.
